Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms Expected Across North and East India
IN · Published Oct 8, 2026
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted significant weather activity across northern and eastern parts of India due to the influence of western disturbances and the onset of the northeast monsoon.
• Isolated thunderstorms and lightning are likely over Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim from 7th to 9th October.

Impact & Risks

The forecasted heavy rainfall and thunderstorms may lead to localised flooding, waterlogging, and disruption of daily activities in affected areas. Gusty winds could cause damage to weak structures, trees, and power lines, particularly in Jharkhand and Odisha. Residents in Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, and Jharkhand should remain cautious, as these regions are expected to receive significant rainfall. Northeast India may also face challenges due to scattered rainfall, potentially affecting transportation and outdoor activities.
